For years dancers have been told not to run.
“You’ll get shin splints”
“It’ll make you inflexible”
“You’ll be working the wrong muscles”
Sure, running can give you shin splints but so can dancing. Yes it can make you inflexible and some of the most inflexible people are runners but this is because runners don’t stretch!! And we simply know better! Running does work different muscles but this is a good thing, because dancers spend so much time turning out it can create a muscle imbalance between the internal and external hip rotators.
So yes dancers should run! Just make sure you’re running with good leg alignment… Leave the turn out at home.
